Steve & Joyce Rebora
Steve Rebora: Since my retirement I have focused mainly on painted wood sculpture. Cutting and shaping a piece
of wood into an image, human or animal, is very satisfying to me. The challenge of three-dimensional work is that
the material often dictates the final result. I feel that painting the figures brings them to life and this animation
of inert material intrigues me. I strive for humor and lightheartedness in the finished piece, achieving the effect
of a three-dimensional, vibrantly colored cartoon.
Joyce Rebora: For the past several years, I have been making small sculptures
out of wood. In this show I've embellished the figures with broken crockery, adding texture and shiny colors. Like
putting together jigsaw puzzles, the application of irregularly shaped shards to the surfaces of my pieces is at
once playful and complex. Another image I frequently use is a simple house form. This shape can be transformed
by materials to convey diverse messages. I cover the bare structure with colorful and engaging found objects. In
my current body of work, I have again used crockery, allowing the colors to dictate the look of the finished sculpture.
I consider each of my pieces, whether houses or people, to be a sort of a self-portrait. |
